Program Quotes

The bi-annual meeting with Bonnie Anderson , veteran reporter for CNN and NBC as guest speaker, was a convivial evening with good fellowship, a marvelous dinner, and a dynamic talk. Bonnie entertained and enthralled us with fascinating facts and tales from her book, "News Flash," especially "Infotainment," and remained to answer many questions during dessert and coffee. It was a gala event planned and presented by Randi that reminded us all that the American News Women's Club is truly a very special place with inviting and important programs.

I enjoyed this event because the speaker demanded justice in news business. I like the activity and management of the ANWC, each time everything is perfect because of Randi and many other best people in the Club like Barbara McLeod ect.

It was a highly entertaining program. The give and take between the speaker and the ANWC members was so lively we finally had to bring it to a close, reluctantly. This is what ANWC membership is all about.

Every journalist should have the integrity, clarity, courage and high-minded thinking of Bonnie Anderson. To have her come to our Club to share her experience and insight into the real story behind broadcast news was a privilege. To experience her passion and socko presentation revived my enthusiasm for our business. 'Twas another one of those not-to-be-missed evenings ANWC members are so lucky to be offered on a regular basis we practically take it for granted. What a gift!

--Ginny Daly

Dynamic and forthright Bonnie Anderson gave us a vivid behind-the-scenes view of how our television news is managed, and of special interest to ANWC, how this winner of seven Emmys has experienced first-hand the "managing" of the women who bring us television news. Stimulating evening and delicious dinner.(Bonnie asked:"Does Randi always cook such great food?"
Answer: yes.

--Donna Shor

Did Randi herself cook the best dinner I've had at the American News Women's Club? There was plenty of excellent protein, and salad alluringly displayed on serving tiers.Dining tables allowed for easy conversation. Former presidents of the club and new board members dominated the audience at the business meeting, which took on an extra glow with the news that $90,000 was safely in the club's nest egg. This Board, which has a history of doing better than its budget projections (causing rejoicing at every meeting), has a conservative budget for next years. Main operating expense will be for an air-conditioning system.

As speaker, Bonnie Anderson who has received seven Emmys, caused me to wonder what she did not say. Her book, "News Flash" is a polemic, with examples, against the changes in the television news business as a result of CNN's rating war with Fox. Bonnie spent ten years at CNN and deplores, as we all do, the loss of its great days of round the world coverage of key events. Both networks spend a lot of time on real life drama following serial stories, e.g., Kobe Bryant and Gary Condit. These in turn come to bore educated viewers, and the spiral descends.

Most interesting was Bonnie's charge to the Club to take on important stories and have an impact. Although the Club used to be a place where inside information was traded, to my knowledge the Club in its history hasn't practiced journalism as an entity. We've had stories offered to us, e.g., last year's request by the Ambassador from Paraguay to investigate money coming from the"Triangle" in South America to finance terrorism (a story that's had confirmation recently). Maybe we should
seize upon a story - after voting- and develop an agenda of four important speakers to deal with it, then write a summary and publish.

Personally, I'd like to know more about what happens to women in the Moslem world: how can they be content with so little respect, and then stick the world with sons who never grow up?

Randi,
I had the pleasure of attending ANWC's event with Christina Rubalcaba this past week and wanted to thank you for hosting the affair. It was wonderful to hear the insights of Bonnie Anderson, and her experience in the news business.

Thank you again and I look forward to seeing you at another ANWC event soon.
